How Is Pumpkin Spice Flavored Coffee Made?

With fall in full swing, we’re seeing coffee lovers ditch their iced concoctions for warmer, cozier cuppa’s! We see seasonal blends like mocha, peppermint and the ever-so-popular pumpkin spice popping up everywhere, offering aficionados sweetly satisfying sips that help melt away the chills of the cold autumn days. While many coffee shops add in flavor shots to make your favorite pumpkin brew, many roasters go straight to the source and expertly infuse their blend with a combination of bold spices to perfectly accent the flavor profile of their beans! So, if you were ever wondering how your favorite cup of pumpkin spice coffee was made, our experts at Bucks County Coffee Company are sharing the different ways boring old coffee can achieve pumpkin spice status!

Specialty Beans to Bring out the Best Flavor

It all starts with the freshest, most flavorful beans. At Bucks County Coffee Company, we use the best beans and best ingredients to make the most perfect tasting pumpkin spice coffee! All our bags are roasted fresh to order, ensuring you get the freshest coffee possible. Our top-quality beans are sourced from all over the world to guarantee the boldest and most unique flavors—from Kenya and Honduras all the way to your coffee cup!

Pumpkin Spice Coffee Grounds

The most basic and common approach to making pumpkin spice coffee is the addition of spices to the coffee grounds. The blend of spices most frequently used is a mixture of ground cloves, allspice, ginger, cinnamon and freshly grated nutmeg. This mixture is then encapsulated in starch or another powdered matrix, which promotes the transfer of flavor to the grounds in about 24 hours. This sweetly spiced blend is then combined with the coffee grounds, placed in a filter, then brewed to your liking.

Pumpkin Spice Flavored Syrups and Oils

Another way to infuse coffee beans with pumpkin spice deliciousness is to slowly immerse the beans into a highly concentrated pumpkin spice flavored syrup or oil. While the whole beans are still warm from the roaster, they are spun in a mixer very gently so there is no damage caused to the beans. Gradually, oils or syrups are added to the mixer, slowly coating the beans. This process can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on flavor complexity and the size of the batch. What you’re left with after 30 minutes is glossy looking beans, coated with your favorite fall flavor!

The Future of Flavor

While both processes mentioned above are the most common ways to flavor coffee, we’re looking at innovative new ways to infuse coffee with exotic flavors. Recently, a patent has been developed for a flavored coffee filter that has been treated with special flavorings. Once the hot water passes through the filter, the filter releases the essence and the grounds then absorb the flavor, letting the consumer completely customize their favorite coffee brands!
