Our Origin Program - How We're Empowering Our Coffee Pickers and Their Families

Here at Bucks County Coffee, we believe that life should be simple. Simple in creation, simple in execution and simple in delivery. The humble beginnings of Bucks County Coffee Company started similarly in 1982—simply. In a tiny carriage house located in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, a vintage roaster and a passion for freshness were the two main ingredients that brewed Bucks County Coffee Company.

Throughout our history, Passion, Sustainability, Teamwork, Quality, Integrity and Service have always been woven through what we do. From our farmers and co-ops all the way to our facility, it’s what we believe in. Because of this, we created our Origin Program. We’re sharing how our program helps to empower our coffee pickers and their families, one bean at a time.

Quality Coffee Starts Here

Our Origin Program began with trust. We purchase entire estate farms pre-harvest to obtain high-quality coffee beans and, in doing so, we form a loyal partnership with the local farmers. Our close relationships with our farmers enable us to easily develop and complete initiatives that directly affect our farmers for the best. In order to deliver our customers the best cup of coffee possible, we need to make sure our partners are thriving along with us.

Honduras Milling Partners

The road our beans travel—from initial harvest to your cup—has many steps. Our beans are first converted from the raw fruit into the finished product. For this to happen, the coffee beans go through a milling process that involves running the beans through a special machine to remove the outer shell. Great care needs to be taken during this process as the heat from the machine greatly impacts the final product. Our Honduran milling partners know just how important this process is.

To provide additional support, we partnered with them in an initiative that aims to empower the coffee pickers and their families. With our support, our Honduran milling partners are constructing nurseries for the children of the pickers, in order to provide a safe place for them to spend the day while their parents work. These structures provide the children with shelter, along with the delivery of two meals per day and daily education. This program has been successful in diminishing child labor while offering education, food and a safe haven for the children of the pickers.

Honduras Farm CO-OP

In our efforts to grow our sustainability initiative, we have also partnered with a co-op of farms in Honduras. With our support, they have been able to create an elaborate system at their wet mill that allows them to dispose of contaminated water in an environmentally-friendly way. Rather than disposing of the contaminated water back into the clean supply, they funnel the water into a holding reservoir where organisms break down the sugars in the water. This neutralizes the liquid, which is then reused at the mill. They have also created custom fertilizers for different farms. Since the soil varies from farm to farm, the specific fertilizers help create balance and harmony for each farm.

Because of our efforts, and the efforts of our partners, Bucks County Coffee Company can bring you the freshest, most sustainable and highest quality cup of coffee available. We roast everything fresh to order, meaning you get the freshest coffee possible with every cup. With so many blends and flavors to choose from, we promise you’ll find something you will love.
