Location:  Yirgacheffe region in the South of Ethiopia

Yirgacheffe, officially part of Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR)—is a celebrated coffee-growing area. The coffees are commonly sold under the name “Yirgacheffe,” which is also a woreda (district) within Gedeo. Many buyers traveling to the region pass through Hawassa, Yirga Alem, and Dilla, familiar hubs in Ethiopia’s specialty coffee trade.

Micro Lot - Small Farm Collective

Our Yirgacheffe coffee comes from smallholder family farms rather than large estates. Typical farm size ranges from about 0.25 to 2 hectares, often described as a garden production system. Coffee is usually grown in mixed agroforestry—tucked among food and shade plants—commonly under banana or other nitrogen crops and alongside other shade trees and soil-supporting crops. This style of farming helps protect the coffee from heat stress, supports soil health, and fits naturally into the household’s food and income system.

Yirgacheffe has long been famous for washed coffees with crisp, floral clarity, and it’s increasingly recognized for natural-process lots that show riper fruit while staying clean and balanced.

Cultivation and processing

On these small farms, cherries are typically handpicked and then delivered to local washing stations and drying stations (often run by cooperatives or private mills). These sites act as collection and processing hubs where cherries from many nearby farms are combined, sorted, and processed—either:

  • Washed: for a clean, bright, floral profile, or

  • Natural: dried as whole cherry for more fruit-forward sweetness and heavier body.
